No Matter How I Look at It, It’s You Guys' Fault I’m Not Popular!

Synopsis[]

This chapter continues from the previous.

Koharu sits on her haunches near her empty popcorn bucket glaring angrily ahead.

There are tears in her eyes.

Running feet kick over the bucket to Koharu's horror. Standing, Koharu screams, "Wait?! Shitty Glasses!![1] Compensation!! Compensation!!" at the panting Kotomi. With a view of the tipped-over bucket, Kotomi is heard protesting that she is in a hurry and it was practically empty. Koharu spats back that the deliciousness is concentrated into the little pieces.[2] Kotomi tosses three 100 ¥ coins[3], which Koharu, now surrounded by sparkles, happily gathers up.

Kotomi dramatically sets her legs, dramatically pants, then dramatically looks upon the scene. She stands behind Asuka and Tomoko, who observe Mike and Kakkun chatting on the bench with "♡" above them next to Tomoki and Masaki, who do not have "♡" above them: Tomoki stares ahead and downward with his GHOST Face, whilst Masaki regards him.

Shodō c222-3

Shown: An Epic Example of 書道

In an Epic Example of Japanese Calligraphy, Kotomi spews forth invective that even the Fanilators will not touch.[4] The crowd watches Mike and Kakkun Masaki and Tomoki, which consists of Yoshinori, Wada, Shiki, Anna, Reina, and Akane as well as Tomoko and Asuka. The Anonymous Musician-Chan and her immediate audience turn towards Kotomi's direction. Shiki looks surprised, Anna smiles, Reina swears as she announces the arrival of "Glasses," and Akane looks serious as she sweats. From their perspective, both Masaki and Tomoko sweat as they watch Kotomi approach.

She plops next to Hina, who inwardly reacts in shock: "Ee–?! Here–?!!" She turns towards Tomoki and rather formally starts, "E - first of all, Tomoki-kun . . . thank you for your hard work on stage." Next to her, Hina sweats, regards her warily, and wonders what would be the timing for her to escape. Masaki looks in Kotomi's direction, and Tomoki reacts with a bit of surprise and thanks her. Kotomi then states that as someone who has been watching him since rehearsals, she thinks that he managed to get through today's debut despite various "happenings," is commendable. She continues to praise his correction of mistakes in his first performance, these mistakes touched her small breast,[5] and then she corrects herself.

A panel viewing the quartet from behind serves as a pause.

Hina Uncomfortable c222-3

The next panel depicts them from the front: Kotomi stares ahead calmly; Masaki and Tomoki look towards her warily; but Hina stares ahead in shock. Inwardly, she wonders about the mood since she has never experienced this "pattern" before in her life, anime, or anything. For his part, Tomoki thinks, "The silence after that scream just now, this person's really scary. . . ."

The scene shifts to from behind Akane, Anna, and Shiki. Anna observes, "In a way, it's getting interesting." Akane wonders if Hina is okay. Reina turns to the Anonymous-chan holding a guitar and demands they play a heart break song to bring down the tension. With a view of Masaki's torso, legs, and hands between her legs,[6] she claims that while she does not care, and the next panel focuses on her glaring at Kotomi. She continues, "You were scream before." Now more visibly upset, she quotes Kotomi: "'Ōi female gorilla and Pink Pig'[7] you said!!" Shocked Chibi Tomoki marvels, "She heard it all accurately . . . !!" Similarly Shocked Chibi Hina wonders, "'Pink Pig' is refering to me?!"

Surprisingly calm and introspective, Kotomi stares in silence and thinks. ". . . why does it always happen like this?" She observes Tomoki and Masaki: Masaki still glares at her and emits a challenging "AA?!"; Tomoki just watches. Inwardly, she confesses that when she sees Tomoki, she cannot control herself. Imagining arrows pointing to the open space to his right, and the tight space between him and Masaki, she continues, "I actually wanted to sit over there or next to that one, but I got scared and ended up sitting next to Pink Girl."

Focusing on Masaki's now angry yet surprised face, Kotomi continues to rationalize that she does not want to be abusive in front of Tomoki-kun, but, "When I saw this delinquent[8] approaching Tomoki-kun with the sexual desire of a female gorilla, I couldn't find any other words to describe her other than female gorilla." Next focusing on Hina's shocked and sweating face, Kotomi admits that while she does not have anything particular to say about, "this woman," something about her face made her spit out "Pink Pig."

As the Anonymous Singer-chan's voice floats through the air like a tsunami,[9] Kotomi continues her inward confession: "I hate myself for being like this. The song coming from far away really touches my heart." Meanwhile, the now angry Masaki demands, "Oi! Don't ignore me!" Kotomi stares ahead as Anonymous Singer-chan's voice continues to float through the air like a whale,[10] and Masaki's objections increase: "I'm going to erase your existence!! I'm going to drill a hole in your belly like I did in the cafeteria!!"

Failure to Communicate c222-3

Shown: What . . . We've Got Here is . . . a . . . FAILURE . . . to . . . Communicate!
Some Glasses . . . You . . . Just . . . Can't . . . Reach!

Kotomi stands and explodes: "Shut the fuck up!! Don't fucking put horrible words over the lyrics!!"[11] This elicits a shocked "Aan?!" from Masaki. Standing, they rant at one another as Hina looks up sweating with fear, and Tomoki stares with his celebrated irritated look. Kotomi screams that it is correct that Masaki is a "Girl Gorilla," or is she easy to intimidate? "As soon as you're in heat you have kids!" "You're really going to die, aren't you?!" Masaki screams back.

Looking up at them, Hina brightens a bit while sweating and thinks that now she may be able to get out here. She turns to Tomoki and gives him a wink as she thinks, "After I go, do your best, right!" Faceless Tomoki[12] thinks, "annoying. . . ." Kotomi turns on Hina and demands how she can communicate "eye to eye" in all of the confusion: "Don't have sex with your gaze, Lascivious Pink!!"[13] She turns to face Masaki, who screams at her, "Your opponent's over here, so don't fucking ignore me!" Kotomi spats back, "Shut the fuck up! Both you two loser bitches bring it on!!"[14] Masaki reacts in surprise. This is interrupted by a sound of a trumpet being warmed up.[15]

Fūka-chan Sings c222-3

She then turns to gaze upon their audience silently watching them and emits an "A?" Meanwhile, Miho, happily, thanks the Anonymous-chan holding a guitar for lending her her guitar. A concerned Hikari holds her trumpet while Fūka looks at her phone as she adjusts her earpiece. With a smile, she asks Hikari if the lyrics are okay, and Hikari sheepishly affirms this. The audience looks towards this trio. As Fūka stares at her phone and raises her microphone, Miho tells them that because she not very good, she will just follow the mood. Fūka smiles as Hikari and Miho[16] start to play. Reina falls silent. Yuri, Mako, and Akari stare surprised, whilst Faced Sachi inwardly gripes, "Some lame song started. . . ." Similarly, Kotomi, Hina, Masaki, and even Tomoki stare stunned.

Kotomi imagines the trio playing at her as she thinks, stunned, "My[17] fight song, Itō-san everyone?! They are supporting me!!"

Big Sister Kotomi c222-3

Not Shown: Anything disturbing . . . goodness no!

She looks at Masaki, who continues to glare back at her, whilst Hina looks up at her with concern, and Tomoki watches whilst sweating. Kotomi scolds herself not to lose her control to a "delinquent" and "otaku" and vows to now tell Tomoki how she feels. She turns to Tomoki, who looks up at her sweating and with visible concern. "Tomoki-kun," she declares, "I want you to call me, 'Big Brother.'" Tomoki stares back in shocked silence.

"Stop it! !You're disgusting!!" Tomoko suddenly confronts Kotomi. Tomoki utters, "Big sister(ねぇちゃん・nēchan)! A-?!" Kotomi turns back to Tomoki and emits an, "E?!"

Tomoki places his head in his right hand as Kotomi, Tomoko, Masaki, and Hina watch. From the perspective of the audience of Anna, Shiki, Wada, and Akane, probably Wada asks if nēchan means they are brother and sister. "You didn't know that?" Anna chides. Blushing deeply, sweating, and running her right hand through her hair, Tomoko confesses to Tomoki, "It's been so long since you've called me 'Big Sister,' I'm embarrassed . . . especially in public."

Kotomi twitches as she thinks, "I heard her called Tomoki-kun's 'Onēchan,' . . . I halfway came. . . ."[18]

Characters[]

In order of appearance

Referbacks[]

  • "Cry-y-y-ing Over You!": In Chapter 222-2, Koharu tried to offer her bucket of popcorn to Masaki, only to trip and through most of the contents on her and Tomoki. Masaki reacted in her celebrated fashion, leaving Koharu running away crying and emitting insults. Now, when Koharu tries to eat the few popcorns that remained in the bucket, Kotomi kicks it when running along the hallway.
  • "Crimson and Clover!": Mistress Yoshida delivered her exception to Mistress Komiyama's observations regarding her chastity to Mistress Komiyama's stomach with her fist in Chapter 134.
  • "To Hell with Maturity! I'll Only Scream Around Like a Crazy Weirdo!": when Kotomi saw Masaki with her arm around Tomoki in the cafetera in Chapter 133, she raged without caring who heard. This time, she is a little more self-conscious. Progress? Stay tuned!
  • Fangirl: Kotomi has been following Tomoki's acting "career" since the very beginning during rehearsals: Chapters 204-1, 205, 210-1, 210-3, 213-1, and 213-2, and during performances in Chapters 217-3, and 221.
  • "Don't Ignore Me!": as seen at school yard in Chapter 194, Masaki did not take it well when Tomoki had no reaction to her comments. something similar happened at spa in Chapter 214-2, where Masaki got pissed off when she felt ignored by Tomoki. Now, with other target, and after this one insulted directly to her, Masaki got mad and sought for fight when after yelling her and insulting her, Kotomi reacted like nothing happened, or when she ignored her for a second to threat Hina.
  • "Big Brother is Watching You!": During an online study session with Yū and Hikari, Kotomi confessed that she wished to be Tomoki's older brother. Now, either due to courage or total delusion – WataMote Wiki fears both – Kotomi asks Tomoki to call her onii-chan (お兄ちゃん).
  • "Blood is Thicker than Water, Tomoki": on the back cover of Volume 6, when a male classmate asks Tomoki if he has an older sister, he intentionally dodges the question. Now, after Tomoko interfered to stop Kotomi, Tomoki let slip "nee-chan."
  • "Mojyo to Rescue": even if it is just due to her habitual dislike of Kotomi, Tomoko ignores her social phobia and scolds Kotomi when Kotomi becomes a nuisance toward someone who she values. She did this previously in Chapter 133, where she splashed water on Kotomi when she was attacking Yuri.

Cultural References[]

  • "Powdered Cheese!": does not appear in this chapter.
  • Japanese Calligraphy (書道・shodō): impressive work on the Artist's part.
  • Ōenka (応援歌): usually translated as "cheering song," in American English it is "Fight Song," while in British English, it is "[CENSORED – Ed.] Those [CENSORED – Ed.] Over There as Their Moms Watch Song." [Citation Needed – Ed.]

Trivia[]

  • "The Song Remains the Same": It appears that Kotomi starts imaging the lyrics.
    • First Set of Lyrics: 見つめ合うと、素直になれなーい When we look at each other, I can't be honest
      • Same as lyrics to "Tsunami" but the next are different.
    • Second Set of Lyrics: あの時どうして、気持ちを伝えられなかったの At that time why, could I not express my feelings
      • Not part of that song, and WataMote Wiki's Search-Fu appears weak and cannot identify if it is from a song. It does match Kotomi's frustration.
    • Third Set of Lyrics: 君が突然僕の目の前からいなくなって You suddenly disappeared from before my eyes
    • Fourth Set of Lyrics: あの時から僕の胸の穴がぽっかりとあいて Since that time, there's been a hole in my breast.
      • Search finds 僕の胸の穴がぽっかりとあいて a common phrase for "There's been a hole in my heart/breast."
      • WataMote Wiki translates 胸 (mune) as "breast" since the phrase usually has 心 (kokoro) to specify heart, and Kotomi used 胸 when referring to her own breasts.
  • Chiba Lotte Song!: WataMote Wiki feels like we are all in a 1980's adventure-comic-romance series, staring Tom Selleck and Morgan Fairchild. A car is involved. Nevertheless, the lyrics, why not?

Memorable Moments[]

  • "Too Thine Own Glasses be True!": though this is not the first time, Kotomi recognizes her lack of control and resulting behavior is wrong. Will she learn and modify her behavior? Stay tuned!
  • "Music Soothes the Savage Glasses-Chan!": Hikari has witnessed Kotomi starting fights with other girls who talked Tomoki, as in Chapters 134 and 213-1, this is the first time she does anything effective to calm Kotomi down.
  • "Onē-chan Also Loves You, Tomo-kun!": Volume 1 Omake reveals that when they were children, they were devoted to one another, with a little Tomoki calling a little Tomoko "onē-chan." Except for a casual "nē-chan" in Chapter 35, their relationship has been strain to non-existent since the onset of the manga. Nevertheless Chapter 123 reveals that Tomoki has added Tomoko in his cellphone as "nē-chan." Whether because his brain seized because of all commotion, or because subconsciously he still appreciates his sister, Tomoki publicly addresses Tomoko as "nē-chan."
  • "Late to the Party": Wada is added to the list of characters who recently learn that Tomoko and Tomoki are siblings.
